The oil in your vehicle lubricates, cleans, and cools the engine. Over time, the oil can become old or dirty, and the oil levels may even begin to drop. You’ll know when to schedule an oil change at St. Cloud Toyota by checking your oil at home.

Check Your Manual

You want to ensure you follow the automaker’s instructions when checking your oil. The manual will let you know where everything is located and the steps needed.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Checking your oil on a flat surface is best to avoid false readings. If your engine has been running, allow it to cool before checking the oil.

Open Your Hood

The oil dipstick is located under the hood. Open the vehicle’s hood and locate the dipstick, according to the manual.

Check the Oil Levels

Pull the oil dipstick and wipe the oil off on a cloth or napkin. Once the dipstick is clean, reinsert it carefully and remove it; this will be the reading you want to follow. Check both sides of the stick for accuracy.

If your oil is low, it should be replenished. If it’s chronically low, visit us since you may have an oil leak. If it’s dark in color — closer to coffee than amber — it’s old and should be replaced. If your motor oil is the right color and consistency and the levels are high enough, your vehicle is good to go!
